Can’t or don’t want to drill holes in your walls for a hangboard?
Yep, same here. In my current apartment, there are no studs above my doorway that I could drill into. In my last apartment, the landlords wouldn’t let me drill holes in the wall. Before that, I just didn’t want to have to mess with covering up the holes again once I moved out.
Over the past several years, I’ve built a series freestanding hangboard frames that don’t require you to mess with the walls at all. I just moved into yet another new apartment a few months ago and built another one. This time around, I figured I’d take a lot of pictures and exact notes about the process so I could help other people too.
The result is my Freestanding Hangboard Plans ebook. It’s a PDF ebook that is made up of
- 31 big 8.5″ x 11″ pages that you can print out, read on your computer, or read on any portable device that can read PDFs
- 33 photos, diagrams, and illustrations
- Around 6,000 words of step-by-step instruction and tips
Information covered in the ebook includes
- The tools you’ll need
- How much the tools will cost if you don’t have them yet and where you can buy them
- Exactly what pieces of wood you’ll need (with photos and prices)
- The exact cuts of the lumber that you’ll need to make
- Exactly what hardware you’ll need to put the thing together (with photos and prices)
- A list of every hangboard on the market (great if you haven’t bought one yet and want to explore your options)
- Comprehensive step-by-step construction instructions
- And more
The instructions and plans are very detailed. I wrote them for someone who I assume has never built anything in his or her life, so every aspect of the construction is covered.
Want to see what all of that actually looks? Here it is when it’s all printed out in color:

Again, as you can see there are plenty of photos and diagrams to help you along in the construction process.
